Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the textbook Spotlighton English used in the state primary schools in Turkey based on the post-usetextbook evaluation practice and ultimately to develop a new model which willcompensate for the weaker parts of the textbook. The participants in the study are two hundred English teachers at the state primaryschools in five districts in the zmir city: Buca, Gaziemir, Konak, Karşıyaka, andBornava. In order to evaluate the textbook, a textbook evaluation model was developed byreviewing the related literature. The components of the textbook that are investigatedare:- practical considerations- language content- design and organization- language skills- exercises and activities- cultural considerationsThe data analysis was carried out by frequency analysis. The statistical analyseswere carried out using SPSS software program. The results of the frequency analysisare used to interpret the results.Based on the data collected, it is seen that the textbook has major weaknessesespecially under the categries of language content, design and organization, languageskills and exercises and activities. The sample units from the suggested textbookmodel are presented to compensate for these weeknesses and to suggest how apossible textbook model might look like.
