Development of wearable pedometer by using 3-axis MEMS accelerometer

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, we have designed and implemented a pedometer with low cost component. We have utilized the three-axis MEMS digital accelerometer (ADXL345) to record motion activity, the PIC18F4550 8-bit low-power microcontroller to control all the processes of the pedometer and the embedded step algorithm in the developed pedometer. The algorithm embedded in the pedometer has the ability to estimate foot movements by detecting arm movements. The movement of the arm is detected by the accelerometer, so that the developed pedometer can evaluate the position and dynamic change of motion. Then, the algorithm calculates the steps taken by the device and follows it by showing the total distance traveled by the person. The pedometer has also a Bluetooth module (HC-05) to allow tracks the user activity with smartphone or tablet. The developed pedometer device has been tested and compared with real reading and with Smartphone pedometer techniques available with Samsung smartphone. In step calculations, the error is 2% for walking and 6% for jogging. Finally, the test results show that the developed pedometer has 3.3% less errors than the pedometer on smartphones. This is the algorithm with the high accuracy rate has been developed for calculating the steps in the thesis.
