The Contribution of State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions to arts education, comments on exhibitions and problems encountered

This research consists of State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions that are comprehensive and organized activities and occur via the state from 1939, in which they were first started, until the present day. It aims positive and negative aspects of State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions to be identified, whether they contribute to arts education or not and to contribute to future exhibits and works by making suggestions.Screening model is used in this study. Qualitative data were collected according to the survey model, the descriptive analysis of them was made and data obtained was revealed as a result.The research was carried out with literature scanning, document and paper review, as well as interviews. It was conducted on a working group consisting of six arts educators who were over forty, have acted as a jury member in State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions, were a faculty member in Gazi University or still are.Data, sources obtained by literature scanning, documents related to State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions, catalogs prepared for the exhibition consist of information obtained as a result of the interviews with arts educators. Books with information about the exhibition, magazines, newspapers, catalogs, dissertations, official documents, etc. all sources that as far as can be reached were examined, the conceptual framework was created in an appropriate system by compiling information deemed useful. In light of data composing the conceptual framework, questions which will reach the information that will identify problems and our underside problems were prepared. These questions ordered in the form of interview were asked to six arts educators to take their views. Five of these meetings were held by the interviewer himself with the arts educators, and responses were recorded as audio and video. Then, these negotiations were evaluated in the parts of findings and interpretations of the research by being converted to a written text. A one-to-one meeting with an arts educator could not be achieved. Questions have been conveyed to the interviewer by researcher manually, and responses of the interviewer in the light of interview form have been conveyed to the researcher via e-mail. This data obtained was evaluated in the part of findings and interpretations by being subjected to the same application.In the light of emerging findings, it shows that State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions have characteristics of a very important resource from the beginning to the present day for Turkish arts, artists, arts students, arts audience and arts education. These traditional exhibitions decline today with troubles due to various reasons as an indicator of development of Turkish arts. In the light of these findings, recommendations aiming to regain the purpose of exhibitions and future works to be done were presented.Keywords: arts, arts education, arts educators, State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions
