Cinema magazines published in the term of state control (1932/1939)

Etatism is an interventionist economy policy requiring public administration as an obligatory factor. The Republican People?s Party, the ruling party, which considered policies encouraging where the enterprises of private sector were inadequate in the development of the country, included etatism in his party programme in 1931. All the manifestations of state interventions increasing in Turkish economy between 1932 and 1930 were defined in general as etatism. Etatism proved its worth in both economics and cultural fields as technology-science-philosophy-culture and art were regarded as an undivided whole when it was paid attention to complete development model in Atatürk?s thinking.In this aspect, it was likely to put forward that political power and ideology administrate, direct or social reality and human being including economy. Republic put into practise a modernisation project, which could be summarised as creating a new state, society, human being under present conditions. Many ways and methods were developed to reach public according to this aim.A more suitable way than cinema couldn?t be found in educational and cultural fights proving their worth with progresses such as obligation of primary education, combining of instruction, revolution of alphabet, reading-writing mobilization, public schools, public rooms, public houses. In the first years of Republic, similarly in 1930s, cinema as a powerful weapon in domestic and foreign policy was noticed that it would be able able to be used in teaching modern techniques, and information about health and citizenship.Cinema was realised by the state, the force of state although western forms such as theatre, art and music were brought to Turkey by individuals and state maintained the continuaty of cinema inspite of unsuccessful attempts of private sector.The people dealing with cinema comprehended it as an entertainment coming after theatre and magazined mentioned how much Turkish cinema improved. However, in that period cultural policies of etatism taking place in magazines of cinema, discussing educational and istructive aspects which became disscussion matters in these magazines, depended on the views of the ones who published them. In addition magazines of cinema which could be attained, were few and the period of publishing was short, some of them were advertising magazines of films on cinema and their content was limited with news from Hollywood. It was determined that inadequate film production and dependence of Hollywood influenced the content of magazines and the content of magazines focused on films produced abroad and film stars. As Burçak Evren mentioned, in this era cinema administartors? beginning to promote their own films via magazines by handling them showed they regarded cinema as an entertainment and reflected their point of view into the magazines. Magazines organised various campaigns directing people to watch films on cinema and being an actor/actress. This case was just the indicator of non-existence of a culture to watch films in that period. The main subject in magazines was the presentation of Hollywood films and their artists? life stories. It was noticed that film production was limited and its reasons were discussed adequately in magazines as it should have been done although the importance of cinema was emphasized.
