The effcets of using concept cartoon in teaching idiom on the students academic success and attitudes (Example of Toondoo practice)

In accordance with constructivist approach, today's students should be introduced with the learning environments increasing their interest for the lesson as well as helping them to develop themselves for the social life outside the classroom. Mobile learning environment, one of these learning environments, is important in terms of providing the students the chance of communicating with their teachers and classmates about the subject and the lesson, giving them the opportunity of discovering the pleasure of learning in a different atmosphere and making the learning/teaching idioms possible with concept cartoons as a visual material. Explanatory sequential design, one of the mixed research methods, was used in this research, conducted for analyzing the effect of learning Turkish idioms via concept cartoons in a mobile learning environment on 6th grade students' achievements and attitudes towards the lesson and the effect of face-to-face learning Turkish idioms on 6th grade students' achievements and attitudes towards the course. For the reliability analysis, a 25-item test was applied to 228 6th grade students in Düzce/ Center Mustafa Kemal Secondary School in 2018-2019 academic year. As a result of the study, the corresponding Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient is calculated as 0.723. This value shows that the test is reliable. The Turkish Idiom Learning Achievement Test (TILAT) and the Attitude Scale towards the Turkish Lesson (ASTTL) which were prepared to obtain the quantitative data of the research were applied to the students in the experimental and control groups as a pre-test and a post-test. After the pre-test, the students in the experimental group continued the process of learning idioms with concept cartoons in the WhatsApp groups they joined with their smart phones. At the last stage of the study, qualitative data were collected by taking the experimental group students' opinions about the research and the effectiveness of the study was tried to be revealed. Looking at the results of the study, it was concluded that the students who were taught idioms with concept cartoons had a very high scores in The Turkish idiom learning achievement test (TILAT), the teaching method using concept cartoons was more successful than the traditional teaching method, and idiom teaching with concept cartoons was effective on attitudes towards Turkish lesson.
