The investigation of the effects of extracts from different parts of Digitalis lamarckii Ivanina (foxglove) plant on carbonic anhidrase II enzyme

The carbonic anhydrase enzyme is one of the zinc ion metalloenzymes that catalyzes the hydration of CO2 to HCO3 and H+ ions alternately in two steps. The human eye contains CA-I, CA-II, and CA-IV isoenzymes. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are often used effectively in the treatment of glaucoma because they reduce the high intraocular pressure (IOP) produced by the secretion of aqueous humor.Foxglove (Digitalis L.) is an endemic herbaceous plant species belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family, which grows in many places in our country, which is very important for the living body and contributes significantly to the country's economy, especially because it contains cardenolite glycosides, which are the main ingredient of heart medicines.In this study, carbonic anhydrase inhibition activities of methanol, hexane, chloroform, acetone and decoction extracts obtained from root, stem, leaf and flower parts of Digitalis lamarckii Ivanina (Foxglove) plant, which is a candidate to be used in the treatment of glaucoma, were investigated. The extracts showed an inhibitory effect in the range of IC50 values of 64-761 μg/mL. The extract obtained with stem decoction and hexane showed the highest inhibition effect with IC50 values of 64 and 101 μg/mL.
