The relationship between light, color and meaning in digital illustration

In visual arts, the transmission of an information in a produced picture as a message is called illustration. The history of illustration started with stone plaques and cave walls and since 1300, after discovering the paper it has continued its existence by developing different varieties and different techniques until today. With the production and development of computers, digital illustration technique has emerged as a new kind of illustration. Digital illustration is providing printing speed and visual innovations with increasing the production speed with the ease and short paths it provides and because of that, it has become widespread and gained a great deal of importance today. The creativity, talent and technical details of artists are very important in visual arts. However, there are many published studies showing that the use of colors and light is also effective on people's perception. The concept of light and color is perceived as a tool that enables us to perceive objects, feel the depth and see life in its most beautiful form. It is stated that colors have some effects on human emotions classified as personal or generalizable. Numerous studies have been conducted to show that different uses of color and light affect people's perception differently in areas such as painting, graphic design and cinematography. The use of light and color in illustration according to some general meanings in human psychology has helped to better convey the message. The use of light and color according to human psychology and human perception increases the expression power of the message to be given. In other branches of art, for example; Color Correction in cinematography is often used in light and coloring processes however, limited number of studies on the use of light and color (General Filtering, Color Correction, General Lights and Artificial Contour Lights) in the digital illustration area has been published. As a result, the aim of this study is to determine the effects of the use of light and color on the meaning in visual arts and with this datas to discuss the relationship between light, color and meaning in the future of digital illustration or to produce solutions and to contribute to this field.
