Effects of Turkish words entering Turkey Turkish to statement existence after language reform

With the language reform initiated in 1932, the simplification movement was given a start in the language and new words were proposed for foreign words, a process which effected Turkish vocabulary significantly. Some of the proposed words have survived, whereas many of the old words which had been in use throughout the centuries have either disappeared or lost their popularity.This study aims to analyze the effects of language reform on Turkish vocabulary by investigating ?Cep Kılavuzları [Pocket Guides]? 1180 published in 1935; which were small dictionary-like guides from Turkish to Ottoman Turkish-from Ottoman Turkish to Turkish.The study dwells upon the analysis of 8753 new words which were proposed for old Ottoman Turkish words in Türkçeden Osmanlıcaya Cep Kılavuzu. Among those words, we have studied only 1180 ones which can be found in Turkish Dictionary published by Turkish Language Society [TDK] in 2005. This limitation bases upon the assumption that the words which have disappeared in the language have no effect on Turkish vocabulary. The words which existed in the vocabulary before the Language Reform were also excluded. These were identified by investigating ?Kamus-ı Türki? (by Şemseddin Sami, 1900) and ?Yeni Türkçe Lügat, by Ali Seydi, 1929-1930,? both were published before the Language Reform.The word which are subject to this study were comparatively studied in terms of their meanings in TDK Türkçe Sözlük, their use in derivation, joint words, expressions, idioms, and proverbs.
