Toxic effect of dimethoate on the rat brain tissues and the protective role of ferulic acid

Abstract (EN)

Dimethoate (O, O-dimethyl-S-N-methylcarbamoylmethyl phosphorodithioate) is an organophosphate insecticide widely used in agricultural control. Ferulic acid (3-methoxy-4-hydroxycinnamic acid) is a phenolic compound found in various vegetables and fruits and plays a role in destroying reactive molecules, inhibiting lipid peroxidation. In this study, the protective effects of ferulic acid on oxidative damage caused by dimethoate in brain tissue were investigated. For this purpose, an experimental group was formed. 1. Group: Control group, 2 Group: Ferulic acid (30 mg / kg day etc.) treated group, 3. Group: Low dose (1/100 LD50) dimethoate-treated group. 4. Group: High dose (1/10 LD50) dimethoate-treated group, 5. Group: Low doze dimethoate and ferulic acid treated group, 6. Group: High dose dimethoate and ferulic acid-treated group. The experimental animals were given the substances once a day for 28 days. At the end of the experiments, the oxidative stress parameters superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation end product malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were found in the brain tissues of rats. It has been studied comparatively. However, brain tissue was examined histologically under light microscope. As a result of our experiments, a statistically significant difference was observed when the MDA amounts and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, GPx and GST) in the brain tissue of the control group and rats treated with low and high doses of dimethoate were compared statistically. When the low and high dose dimethoate groups were compared with the low and high dose dimethoat and ferulic acid groups, a statistically significant difference was observed in terms of both MDA amount and SOD, CAT, GPx and GST enzyme activities. Our light microscope findings support biochemical studies. Based on this study, it is possible to say that ferulic acid partially reduces dimethoate toxicity.
