Art activities in developing students' listening/watching skills: An action research in primary school Turkish course

The general purpose of this research is to try to determine how the listening/viewing skills of third grade primary school students can be improved by art activities. The research was designed according to the action research design. The implementation of the research was carried out in the spring semester of the 2021-2022 academic year. The research was conducted on all 27 students in 3/F class of a primary school in Kahramanmaraş. The study group of the research consists of a total of eight focus students, seven female and one male, determined by the criterion sampling method. Personal information form, reading comprehension skills achievement test, observation, interview, student products, student diary and visual diaries, researcher diary and visual diary were used as data collection tools in the research. In the analysis of the research data, content analysis was used for the current situation data and systematic analytical analysis was used for the data obtained during the implementation of action plans. In the research, it was observed that students' listening / monitoring skills improved with art activities, students' written and visual note-taking skills improved, students' communication skills improved, students learned to listen to each other, they started to like the Turkish lesson and the listening / monitoring skill area, their participation in the lesson increased and it was concluded that students' focusing skills improved. In addition, it was concluded that students started to get to know themselves and their friends through art activities, their self-confidence improved, their interpretation skills improved, they learned to criticize art, their imagination and creativity increased, and their perspectives began to change. Based on the research results, suggestions were made for the use of art activities in different classes and in the development of different skill areas in primary school.
