Investigation of characterization and applicability of nematic liquid crystals doped with disperse orange dye and carbon nanoparticle

Abstract (EN)
Production of liquid crystals in Turkey is unavailable, but their usage areas are very common. Especially with the applications of the display technology in recent years, they have become the focus of great interest. Liquid crystals have many anisotropic properties and are suitable materials for lots of applications of display and so on. Solubilities for Disperse Orange 11, 13 and 37 dyestuffs within the used liquid crystal E7 were assessed in this Ph.D. study. In pursuit of this stage, order parameter values were determined for 1% of dye solutions within the liquid crystal and consecutive binary dye mixtures as spectrophotometrically. Afterwards, two different types of nanoparticle at a rate of 0.05% by weight were added to the mixture of dye-liquid crystal and order parameter analysis of the mixtures composed of dye and liquid crystal were carried out by adding nanoparticle. Finally, all of these analysis were repeated under different voltages. After assessment of the order parameters, thermal properties of the samples were examined. The studies were completed with the electrical characterization processes and by obtaining the textures of the samples. The percent of solubility values for these dyes were assessed as 2.24, 2.60 and 0.20 respectively. It was found that the order parameter values for the samples without nanoparticle were in the range of 0.51-0.62 and by adding the nanoparticle to these values, it reached at the interval of 0.56-0.74. These values together with the binary dye mixtures reached at the level of 0.90. When the thermograms and the textures which belong to the samples were examined together; it was concluded that the values were consistent with each other. In addition, it was observed that the narrow on the temperature range of the liquid crystal was not occurred with the addition of dye and/or nanoparticle to the crystal, on the contrary, an increase was recorded.
