Abstract (EN)

The clinical success of fissure sealants is related to retention. The aim of our study was to examine the effect of tooth brushing on the retention of fissure sealants. In our study, 120 mandibular third molar teeth were randomly divided into 6 equal groups. Six different fissure sealants (Fuji Triage, BeautiSealant, Prevent Seal, Teethmate F-1, Grandio Seal and Dyract Seal) were applied to the extracted teeth according to the instructions of the manufacturers. In our study, the samples were brushed with 3, 8, 9, 12 and 24-month periods using the brushing simulator and the visual status of the fissure sealants were scored in each control period. Also, the alteration on the mass of fissure sealants after the brushing process was calculated and recorded for each group. According to the results, loss of fissure sealant was observed in 80% of the samples of Fuji Triage group after 24 months of brushing and this result was statistically significant compared to other groups (p <0.001). Following the Fuji Triage group, the most fissure sealant loss was found in the BeautiSealant group with a rate of 35%, but this result was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). A similar result was obtained for Prevent Seal (p> 0.05) whereas no loss of fissure sealant was observed in Teethmate F-1, Grandio Seal and Dyract Seal. When the loss of mass in all fissure sealants was evaluated, 24-month brushing resulted in mass loss in all groups. The highest results was detected in the Fuji Triage group (19%), when the lowest result was detected in the Grandio Seal group with a rate of 7.3%. Glass ionomer based Fuji Triage was found as the most effected fissure sealant in terms of retention. The resin-based Grandio Seal and Teethmate F-1 and compomer based Dyract Seal groups were not adversely affected by brushing.
