Investigation of alkaline-based disinfection effectiveness in dental prostheses

Abstract (EN)

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Oral cavity is a body region based on hard and soft tissues and microorganisms operating in the same environment. Infectious agents can develop rapidly when homeostasis due to normal flora is disturbed. With the use of the prosthesis, the choice of chemical and mechanically effective disinfection methods of the prosthesis varies greatly in the diversity of microorganism species. The aim of this study is to determine the time-dependent effectiveness of the alkaline disinfectant substance applied to the prosthesis by chemical method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 20 patients who applied to the Faculty of Dentistry for dental prosthesis treatment between 05.04.21 and 07.05.21 were included. In order to determine the effectiveness of alkaline peroxide-based chemical denture cleaner tablet, samples were taken for microbiological evaluation from the anterior and posterior parts of the denture at zero, three, and ten minutes. In this process, demographic data were obtained by questionnaire. Swab samples stored in transport medium were taken from all patients to prevent the sample from drying out. Depending on the identification of in vitro studies, the disinfection efficiency of 3 and 10 minutes and the existence of the difference between the disinfectants determined at 0 minutes during the protocol period that the disinfectant company found effective were investigated. RESULTS: Reproduction was detected in 100% of the patients in prosthesis samples taken from prosthesis users, and it was statistically confirmed by ANOVA method. While the continuation of colonization of the zero-minute species was isolated in the third minute, inactivation due to chemical disinfection was observed in 35% of the microorganisms in 10 minutes. In the samples taken from the posterior left and right jaws, the bacterial density decreased with time and was statistically significant (p=0.000). The level of significance continued according to the type of prosthesis and the year of use. Accordingly, the disinfection time; It has been reported that it depends on the cleaning method, the age of the prosthesis and the type of prosthesis.CONCLUSIONS: In our study, it was determined that 3 minutes was not effective for disinfection time. It has been determined that more than 10 minutes is required for effective results. Our study was found to be compatible with other studies in the literature.
