Abstract (EN)
The most common cause of chronic swellings of the jaws is the cyst which is a pathologic space filled with fluid, lined by epithelium and surrounded by a definite connective tissue wall. The purpose of this study is to determine the relative frequency of odontogenic cysts in adult patients apply to Gazi Universty of Faculty Dentistry, Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology for some kind of dental problems and to compare these data with previously published reports from other geographic areas. The study group is composed of eight hundred odontogenic cysts diagnosed in adult patients during 7 years. There are a total of 800 odontogenic cysts; of these 513 occured in male, 287 in female and the age of patients range from 20 to 89 years. There are analyzed statistically with regard to age, sex, anatomical distribution and histological diagnosis. The study indicate that inflammatory odontogenic cysts (69.4%) are more common than developmental odontogenic cysts (30.6%). Radicular cyst (59.9%) are the most common odontogenic cyst, followed by dentigerous cyst (21%), residual cyst (8.9%), odontogenic keratocyst (7.9%), lateral periodontal cyst (1 %), paradental cyst (0.6%), calcifying odontogenic cyst (0.5%), gingival cysts of adults (0.1%), glandular odontogenic cyst (0.1%). The odontogenic cysts occured most frequently in the posterior mandible and the second decade of life.
