Abstract (EN)

Gingival enlargement is a common periodontal disease, caused by a variety of etiological factors and is exacerbated by local bacterial plaque accumulation. There is now general agreement that all gingival overgrowth lesions contain fibrotic or expanded connective tissues with various levels of inflammation.NO is a free radical that is generated by NOS isoenzymes and is usually removed by oxidation and nitration reactions. The unstable structure of NO is the reason for its short life.The effects of NO on the tissues vary according to the amount. The lower amount of NO produced by cNOS has a protective and regulative effect while the higher amount has a detrimental effect indirectly.In the present study secondary wound surfaces were created by periodontal surgery and electro surgery methods using split-mouth technique in young patients who had gingival enlargement caused by inflammation. Three days after obtaining the first control tissue biopsies in control group, tissue biopsies from both groups were obtained before the gingivectomy procedure and the iNOS expression were examined immunohistochemically.Statistically significant increase was obtained in the coter group for iNOS positivity and iNOS staining intensity when compared with other groups. The time dependent change of the inflammation levels between the three groups was statistically insignificant.By the evaluation of clinical and immunohistochemical data, the cotter group which is known to have delayed wound healing, was thought to have a correlation with the statistically significant increasing of the iNOS positivity.It can be concluded that, the increase of iNOS level might cause delay in wound healing and it might be considered that periodontal disease and wound healing could be regulated by controlling the production of NO by means of iNOS inhibitors applied in tissues.
