The relationship between the life quality of diabetic patients with their depression and anxiety levels and underlined differences regards their diabetes type

Diabetes is a disease that requires adaptation and self-care of individuals in their treatment process as one of the ongoing diseases. Diabetes causes psychological problems along with the physical problems and adversely affects the patient's life. As in many chronic diseases, the life quality of diabetes patients is an important problem that needs to be dealt with in treatment programs. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the life quality of diabetic patients with their anxiety and depression levels regards to the diabetes type. In this research 202 diabetic patients from a wellness center in Adana are included in investigations. Accordingly, "The Personal Information Forum", "World Health Organization Life Quality Scale Short Forum", "Beck Depression Scale" and "Beck Anxiety Scale" are applied to demonstrate the relationship between the life quality with the depression and anxiety levels. Additionally, the underlined differences arise from the diabetes type is examine as well. Compliance of data with normal distribution is determined based on the available normality tests and histogram approaches. Accordingly, t-test, one-way variance analysis, Pearson correlation are utilized to analysis the continuous variables with normal distribution. While Mann Whitney U, Kruskall Wallis test and Spearman correlation tests were used to analyze non-normal continuous variables. However, Chi-square test is used in analysis of the categorical variables. Statistical analysis are performed using SPSS version 22.0 software. It is implied from the results that Type 1 diabetes patients presents lower life quality, higher depression and anxiety levels compared with Type 2 ones. Accordingly, depression and anxiety symptoms could affect negatively the life quality of patients. Additionally, it has been concluded that the life quality is decreased with age. As well, smoking, low education level, weight and non-working status of patients negatively influences their life quality and increases the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
