Reliability and validity of the turkish versions of self-care inventory-revised and perceived diabetes self-management scale in patients with diabetes mellitus

Abstract (EN)
Introduction: In the treatment of diabetes, having self-efficacy, knowledge, and skills are very important for patients to cope with their problems. It is extremely difficult to evaluate self-care behaviors and self-efficacy in diabetes self-management. Good quality measurement tools with proven psychometric properties have made it easier for healthcare providers. More than 50 patient-reported outcome measures have been developed in the last 20 years about diabetes. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish versions of SCI-R and PDSMS. Material and methods: Turkish version of the scales was developed by using the translation-back translation method. As the last step of transcultural adaptation, the content validity was evaluated by 14 experts, and the scales were finalized by the expert committee. One-hundred fifty type 1 and 328 type 2 diabetes patients admitted to Gazi University Medical Faculty Hospital outpatient clinics were included in the study. The construct validity of the scales was examined by factor analysis (EFA and CFA), discriminant, convergent and known-groups validity. In order to determine the reliability of the scales, internal consistency analyzes were made through Cronbach alpha. The intraclass correlation and Spearman correlation coefficients were examined for test-retest reliability. Results: The average age of 478 diabetic patients is 49.9 ± 17.2 years and the average HbA1c value is 8.2 ± 1.9%. EFA analyzes showed that for type 1 diabetes; factor loads were between 0.371 and 0.794 for single-factor structures of SCI-R and PDSMS. In the type 2 diabetes group, the factor loads were between 0.353 and 0.756 for the single factor structures of SCI-R and PDSMS. As a result of CFA analysis of the scales in both diabetes groups, their single-factor structures were confirmed and fit indices were found to be at an acceptable level. For test-retest reliability, ICC values of the scales are > 0.9 and, and this is a high value. Cronbach's alpha values in the Type 1 diabetes group were 0.831 for SCI-R, 0.784 for PDSMS, while in the type 2 diabetes group it was 0.785 for SCI-R and 0.822 for PDSMS. The internal consistency of the scales is at a satisfactory level. In addition, a moderately positive correlation was found between SCI-R and PDSMS scores (r = 0.553; p <0.001). Conclusion: The Turkish versions of SCI-R and PDSMS were found to be valid and reliable for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients. Both scales were evaluated as a uni factor like the originals and the total score was calculated.
