Abstract (EN)

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) has emerged as an important public health issue worldwide, because of the marked increase in its incidence and prevalence. There are many environmental and genetic factors contribute to the occurrence of End-Stage Renal Disease. Vascular endothelial growth factor "VEGF" has been reported to play a major role in renal pathophysiology. The aim of this study was to determine the association between "End-Stage Renal Disease" and "VEGF rs699947 polymorphism" in a Turkish population. Genotyping was carried out in 50 "ESRD" patients and 30 healthy controls, using Kompetitive Allelic-Specific PCR (KASP) method. Our study`s results revealed that there are significant differences between case and control groups in terms of age and serum creatinine (all the P=0.000). Considering that A is the minor (risky) allele and it was observed that the frequency of AA genotype was high in the control group compared to case group, it was suggested that AA genotype may be a protective factor for ESRD in Turkish population.
