A study on neighborhood names of central districts of Diyarbakır province

Language is one of the elements that enable people to express their feelings and thoughts. People convey their feelings and thoughts with the elements of language. Names, which are one of the ways people define objects, help people perceive and make sense of themselves and their surroundings. People feel the need to name the place they live in to try to perceive their surroundings. In this study, the neighborhoods of the central districts of Diyarbakır province are examined in terms of urbonimy, or urban onomastics. Urban onomastics benefits from the geography, history, culture, sociology and ethnology of the city in which it is located. There are many reasons why a city is given its name. Urban onomastics analyzes these reasons starting from the history of the city and determines the reasons for the name of the city. Urban onomastics also examines the reasons for the names given to districts, districts and neighborhoods; boulevards, avenues and streets. The study consists of two parts: 1. Introduction and 2. Neighborhood Names of the Central Districts of Diyarbakır Province. In the "Introduction" section of the study, the origin of the name of Diyarbakır province, its structure, meaning, history, geographical location, the name of the central districts of Diyarbakır, its history and geographical location, urban onomastics and the history of urban onomastics are mentioned. In the second part of the study, information is given about the reasons for giving the names of the neighborhoods of the central districts of Diyarbakır province. The old names of the neighborhoods of the central districts and the reason for giving these names are explained in this part of the study. Diyarbakır has hosted many civilizations throughout history. These civilizations that have owned Diyarbakır have contributed to the formation of Diyarbakır's urban culture. The history, language, culture and traditions of Diyarbakır have survived to the present day. In this study, the neighborhood names of the central districts of Diyarbakır, located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, were examined in terms of urban onomastics.
