Abstract (EN)
Various rules have been developed throughout history to ensure that societies can live together in harmony. Some of these rules were codified by the state, while others emerged as unwritten but effective practices, shaped by the beliefs, traditions, and cultural structures of societies. This body of rules, called "töre," guided the behavior of individuals within society and determined their social standing. Individuals who defied tradition were eventually ostracized, while those who adhered to tradition became accepted members of society. One of the most tragic consequences of this customary understanding was the "honor killings," which were occasionally perceived as legitimate within the social structure. This study examines the responsibilities and impacts of religious officials in preventing honor killings from a sociology of religion perspective. The primary objective of the research is to reveal the ways in which religious authorities intervene in such incidents, their impact on society, and the extent to which these interventions serve as a deterrent. The study explores the sociological foundations under which honor-based violence emerges and how religious officials can change these foundations. Thus, it aims to fill a significant gap at both academic and societal levels. The problem area examines the extent to which social structures that legitimize custom conflict with religious values and how religious officials can develop solutions to this conflict. The research was conducted using qualitative methods, and analyses were conducted based on data obtained through interviews and case studies. The findings indicate that individuals with religious esteem can, in some cases, play a mediating and preventive role, and that these interventions can be effective in preventing some honor killings. However, it was also determined that this impact is not uniform across regions, and that traditional structures sometimes become more dominant than religious rules. These data highlight the potential role of religious leaders in establishing social peace and provide a sociological framework for understanding the extent to which religion can be instrumental in transforming cultural values.
