Azmî from Diyarbakır and his Divançe (Survey-text-index)

This study aims to give information about the life of Azmî from Diyarbakır, his literary personality, his works, his poetics, and to create a critical text of Azmî Divançesi.Azmi, whose real name is Ahmet, is one of our XIX. Century Diwan poets. Being born in Diyarbakır, the poet moved to Istanbul, Erzurum, Bitlis, Damascus, Halab, Iraq and Hedjaz, and came back to his own hometown. He, then, died there in 1831.As far as we could assess, Azmi, proficient in the fields of religion, Sufism, and literature, wrote two poetic works named ?Divançe? and ?Miftahü?l-ma?ani?, dream interpretation.This study is made up of two parts. In the first part, Azmi?s life, his works, and the data attained from poems and his works are presented. In the second part, the critical text of Azmî Divançesi is constituted by comparing the two copies and through a comprehensive catalog search.The Diwan of Azmi is made up of 231 poems and 1431 verses. It also contains a preface written in prose, 3 odes (kaside),1 quadrate poem (murabba), 4 tahmis written for the odes (gazel) of Râsih, Bâkî and İlhâmî, 1 pentastich (muhammes), 3 müseddes,1 terkib-bend, 167 odes (gazel), 14 verses (kıt?a), 12 visual poems, 19 riddles (muamma) and 6 lügaz.An exponent of the classic Diwan poetic tradition, the poet attached much more importance to denotation than way of expression, and thus, he didn?t consider the use of rhyme and rhythm as important.Upon Azmi, the poets such as ?Fuzûlî, Bâkî, Shaykh al-islam Yahyâ, Nâbî, İlhamî? and the poets from Diyarbakır such as ?Vâlî, Hâmî, Lebib? had an impact. Of these poets, the one who affected Azmi most was Nâbî, foremost representative of the philosophical poetry.Azmi was more than a man of style, but a man of poet addicted who was affected by numerous poets. He carries the features of philosophical poetry and classic manner, though he sometimes reflected the effects of localization.He usually wrote love-thematic poems, and he had a lot of poems in which he used religious and Sufistic elements, as well.
