Effect of proinflammatory cytokines in the hoffa tissue in the development of osteoarthritis in the knee joint

Objective: The aim of this study to investigate the effect of proinflammatory cytokines and inflammatory process in the hoffa tissue in the development of osteoarthritis in the knee joint Material-Method: A total of 68 patients, 36 women and 32 men, who applied to the orthopedics policlinic for thr knee pain and were operated arthroscopically were included in the study. A preoperative patient form was created for each patient, including demographic characteristics, preoperative WOMAC, KOOS, WORMS and Kellgren-Lawrence scores. Outerbridge classification was performed arthroskopically and a saple was taken from the hoffa tissue. The amount of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 in hoffa tissue was measured microscopically and H-Score was calculated histologically. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) calculated by H-SCORE in the patients whom we evaluated clinically with WOMAC and KOOS scales, radiological with WORMS, Kellgren-Lawrence scoring, Outerbridge staging arthroscopically. Conclusion: Although the inflammatory process may originate from different tissues in the development of osteoarthritis in the knee joint and inflammation is associated with cartilage damage, it has been observed that there is no relationship between proinflammatory cytokine levels in the hoffa tissue and osteoarthritis patients at different stages. Multidisciplinary studies with different inflammation markers may be informative about the complex etiology in the development of osteoarthritis.
