Experimental investigation of usage of bioethanol, biodiesel and diesel blends in diesel engines depending on engine load

Abstract (EN)

There is a great interest to find and develop alternative fuels for using in internal combustion engines which are mainly used in transportation, industry and agricultural facilities as petroleum has limited reserves and it is run out. In addition, excessive use of petroleum based fuels increase air pollution which has negative effects on environment and health. This increases importance of researching alternative fuels. In this context, biodiesel and bioethanol have mostly been used in internal combustion compression ignition (diesel engines) engines. In this work, usage of blends of bioethanol and diesel in diesel engines has been investigated experimentally. For this purpose, blended fuels were tested in a 3-cylinder and direct injection diesel engine powered generator under constant speed and variable load conditions, and the performance and emissions were investigated. Besides, biodiesel derived from waste frying oil and its blends with diesel and diesel-bioethanol-biodiesel blends were tested, too. Experimental results showed that fuels blends containing bioethanol or biodiesel increased fuel consumption while reduced emissions like CO, NOx and smoke in the exhaust. Moreover, smoke opacity reduced considerably with using blends containing bioethanol.
