Document management system design

This thesis covers two sub-components of a digital document management system which consists of document mark-up, access control system, content repository, search/index and workflow components. The two components are access control subsystem and content repository. Remaining sub-systems will be handled in the next researches. As access control sub-system, legacy systems such as (Discretionary Access Control) DAC and (Mandatory Access Control) MAC and their variations such as Lampson, Bell- LaPadula, Biba, Chineese Wall, etc. was examined. Role Based Access Control System (RBAC) was also studied. A new hybrid model of RBAC and MAC has been introduced. The consolidated model was implemented in the well-known entity-relationship(E-R) notation and functions of the model, such as role hierarchies, constraints, sensitivity labels, are explained briefly via algorithms and sql queries. An Oracle database schema named ?DOCMAN? generated from the E-R model. Content of this schema is extracted to a dump file named ?user_docman_dm_management.DMP?. JSR-170 Content Repository Model was examined for repository model of the system and an XML backed workspace model which is based on JSR-170 repository has been introduced. A repository viewer tool named ?Document Composer? which implements the introduced idea was presented. An installer named ?doccomposer-install.jar? is also created for the ?Document Composer? tool. Since the whole system is an integratation of several sub-systems, proposals related to each sub-system was given within it?s own chapter.
