Abstract (EN)
In this study it is aimed to assist producing short and long term future strategies related tothe region, by analysing the political approach of the coastal nations and global out-regional actors, and by determining East Mediterranean legal status, importance and its strategic value for Turkey. The exclusive economic zone is a sea area untill 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. In compliance with international law, exclusive economic zone (EEZ) delimination should be made according to the equitable principles. Another significant point in delimination is the existence of the islands. There are no maritime deliminations regording exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the region between Turkey and other coastal nations. Turkey is the country that has the longest coastal lengh in East Mediterranean Area. It has some definite rights emerging from international law and its historical heritage. With the assistance of Prime Ministerial coordination, a study council should be established by the Üniversities graduates of which are experts on Maritime, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Naval Forces Command, National Intelligence Organization issues and international law. After this study, through such treaties Turkey will be able to assert a national map of Exclusive Economic Zone in Eastern Mediterranean in accordance with its own rights and interests enshrined in international law.
