Abstract (EN)

The Newly Industrializing Countries of East Asia (Republic of Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia) have a remarkable record of high and sustained economic development process during the last three-four decades. These countries have grown more than twice as fast as the rest of East Asian countries, roughly three times as fast as Latin American countries and five times faster than Sub-Saharan Africa countries. As results of this rapid growth period human welfare has improved and the development gap between the developed countries and East Asian countries has dramatically been closed. The Newly Industrializing Countries of East Asia have pursued export-led development strategies and generally combined this strategy with models of state-led development. The multilateral international institutions such as the World Bank, have suggested the East Asian development experience, as a model to other developing countries. Therefore they are called ?High performing Asian Economies and Asian Tigers? by World Bank. In this Study, It is attempted to study the experience of development process of East Asian countries, the tools and consequences of Asian Development Model In a addition, the East Asian development experience has been compared to Turkey?s experience in industrialization and development of the same period. The thesis is composed of four chapters. In chapter one, the historical evolution of developmental state concept in the World context and the developmental state and implementation of industrialization strategies are summarized.The policies which led to the rapid and sustained development model of the East Asian countries are examined in the next chapter. Chapter three is included that Turkey?s development model as a strategically growth model. In the last chapter, the East Asian development and industrialization model is compared with the Turkish experience and an assessment and evaluation are made.
