Feminist translation on eastern and western axis

The aim of this thesis is to reveal the contributions and efforts of translators' to feminist translation and feminism by translating the works of the authors who are mostly the subjects of trans-national culture, mostly lived in East-West axis. When translation is handled in terms of the product that emerges from the subject of the translation activity and languages, it is in-between position. Selected texts are about lives and academic products of women from the geographies Westernized by the West. Case study, which is a type of qualitative research techniques, was used in this research. Qualitative research methods are the most preferred ones in feminist research because main goal is evaluating a situation, event or phenomenon with its specific dimensions. Firstly, eight books including information about lives, struggles and academic products of Eastern women were read. Combining such concepts as feminism, translation, east/west and feminist translation and examining it through the perspectives of eight translators required detailed analysis. Semi structured interview form was used and after the transcribing process of face-to-face interviews, the themes, sub-themes and codes were determined with a specialist and in the end assured code table was formed. The themes were determined depending on the research questions. After that, code tables were created and the codes that constitute the findings of the research were interpreted one by one with the help of scientific texts and books in the literature. It can be concluded that, although there is only one translator in our group who has an idea about feminist translation, we can bravely mention that translators of those texts are serving the aims of cultural turn in translation and feminist translation by eliminating the "Western" focused borders of those concepts. In translation Studies, with the cultural turn "otherness" and making other cultures visible has become focus of interest. Women and works including women in "other" geographies and cultures were introduced to the target culture and reader via translation. The dimension of feminist translation becomes important at this point of view. We believe that feminist translation can be totally inclusive and free itself from Canadian School label by seeing differences and flexing its boundaries. All of the participants were aware of the meaning of living in an "in-between space" depending on the geography and culture that an individual has been living or had lived. The findings suggested that all of the participants have determined the source text with the conscious of women freedom and normalizing east and lives of women living there. This practice is a wealth for translation studies and feminist translation since translation is the way of expressing commonness as well as differences. Whether they are east or west origin, their lives and problems meet on a common plane. The action that announces the voice of this partnership is translation. Interviewed translators who are living in Turkey or have lived in the past had made their in between position visible depending on the cultural, ideological, gender and language factors. This was made by choosing a trans-cultural writer's text focusing on woman theme to translate. Feminism may go further as long as it embraces every geography and women with differences and similarities. In this sense, this research, can be accepted as an evidence that shows the broadening borders of Feminist translation.
