The effect of synthetic oxytocin of labour induction, in newborn umblical cord gas

Abstract (EN)

Aim: This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of synthetic oxytocin application administered for induction of labor on the umbilical cord blood gas and oxygen saturation level of the neonate. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in Tokat State Hospital (18 January 2019 -13 November 2019) using a randomized controlled trial design. While the population of the study consisted of women (N = 965) who came to the hospital for delivery, the sample included 120 women and newborn babies who were randomly selected. The data were collected using a "Personal Information Form". In the analysis of the data, Independent Samples T-test, Student's T-test, Two Way Analysis of Variance in Repeated Measurements or One Way Variance Analysis (ANOVA) were employed for analyzing the relationship between quantitative inter-group mean scores. On the other hand, the relationships between qualitative variables were analyzed using the Chi-square test. In maintaining the effect of randomization and preventing attrition bias, intention-to-treat analysis (ITT), expectation-maximization method, and incomplete observations analysis were employed for the missing participants. Findings: The comparison of the umbilical cord blood gas parameters (pH, lactate, PCO2, actual and standard bicarbonate) of synthetic oxytocin administered for induction of labor between the experimental group and the control group indicated that there was no significant difference between the groups (p> 0.05). The effect of synthetic oxytocin administered for induction of labor on the Apgar score at the 1st, 5th, and 10th minutes did not yield significant inter-group and intra-group differences (p> 0.05). On the other hand, the inter-group and intra-group comparisons of the effect of synthetic oxytocin administered for induction of labor on oxygen saturation levels at the 2nd minute indicated a significant difference (p <0.05). Conclusion: Synthetic oxytocin administration for induction of labor was determined to have no effect on fetal acid-base status and Apgar score. Considering these fetal effects, synthetic oxytocin application can be used when necessary.
