Determination of the applications of the midwives and nurses working in the delivery room for the security of baby and mother

SUMMARYWhen the causes of the events that have resulted in death are examined, it is seen that the rates of the deaths that are caused by the mistakes made during the provision of the health services are noticeable. The increase in the medical mistakes made it obligatory to carry out the services for the patient security. When the situations that may lead to irreversible results due to the mistakes in the running of the processes especially such as birth that is natural and at the same time complex, the importance of the services of patient security in the delivery room is understood.In this study done as descriptive, the applications of the midwives and nurses for the safety of mother and baby in the delivery room have been evaluated.The population of the research is constituted by 8 universities in the centre of Ankara and 179 midwives and nurses working in the delivery rooms of the training research hospitals. 140 midwives and nurses who constitute %78 of the population were taken to the sampling. The data was collected with the questionnaire form that includes the questions regarding the general features of the delivery room, sociodemographic attributes and delivery room patient safety applications. The findings were evaluated with the percentage distribution.As a result of the research, it has been determined that there are no controlled gates in 3 hospitals, there is no incubator in 1 hospital out of 8. It has been seen that %21,2 of the midwives and nurses participating in the research dont fix arm band while they are taking the mother to the delivery room, %34,3 of them use room / bed number in the determination of the identity, %63 of them don?t register the given instructions during the emergency- sterile applications. Also, it has been determined that %8,6 of the midwives and nurses leave the mother and baby alone in the delivery room, %41,4 of them don? t use the incubator while carrying the baby, %27,9 of them don?t write date on the arm band of the baby and %11,4 of them don?t follow the uterus involution.According to the results of the research, it has been determined that most of the targets for enabling baby and mother safety in the delivery rooms are achieved, however due to the deficiencies in the application is threatening the patient security in the extent that cannot be underestimated. The institutions are suggested to evaluate the relevant applications regarding patient security in the delivery rooms and resolve the deficiencies.Key Words: Patient Safety, Delivery Room, Mother, Baby, Nurse, Midwife
