Learning styles for students of ninth grade and field study of multiple intelligence

This research is aimed to set out the learning styles and the field study of multiple intelligence for students of ninth grade to investigate the relationship between learning styles and study fields of multiple intelligence and whether they vary by sex and training level of parents and for students going to public and private schools and by students' academic achievements.Research group consist of students of ninth grade from public schools and private schools in 2008-2009 academic year in Seyhan and Çukurova central district in Adana. For this research 254 students from public schools, 264 students from private schools, 235 boys and 283 girls of total 518 students were contacted who were chosen by means of proportioned tuft illustrating by random.The model of research is relational survey. Data collection instrument of research consists of three main sections. First section: personal information form that is developed by the researcher, second section: self-assessment inventory at field study of multiple intelligence by Seber (2001), Third section: Inventory of learning styles BIG 16, developed by Şimşek (2002).Frequency, percent, t-test analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear stepwise regression analysis is used in data analysis. In all statistical analysis significance level criteria have been 0.05. In doing analysis it was benefited from SPSS 11.5 package programme.The results obtained from research are summarised below:The students choice of learning style is firstly visual, secondly audial and lastly physical/kinaesthetic . In audial learning style , girls are more audial than boys. Also the students of the public schools are more audial than the students of the private schools. Theivscores of learning styles are determined to be indifferent according to their parents educational level.According to the results of the fields of multiple intelligence students mostly intrapersonal and they are rarely logical/mathematical. The female students are more developed in oral/linguistic, visual/spatial, physical/kinaesthetic, musical/ rhythm and social/interpersonal intelligence than the male students.ın oral/linguistic and naturalistic intelligence students of public schools are more developed than of private schools. When education level of parents has been investigated ; the mother effects the fields of musical/rhytm and naturalistic intelligence and the father effects only the fields of musical/rhytm intelligence of the student .In this research it is determined that there is not a significant relationship between the scores of the students in learning styles and their academic success. But there is a weak, positive linear relationship between the scores of the students in multimodal intelligence and their academic success.Lastly there is a positive linear relationship between the scores of the students in learning styles and their scores in the fields of multiple intelligence ; reciprocally visual learning style and visual/spatial intelligence, physical/kinaesthetic learning style and physical/kinaesthetic intelligence, audial learning style and oral/linguistic intelligence. The scores of the students in the field of multiple intelligence illustrate their scores in learning styles and thus the results are as follows; the field of visual/spatial intelligence explains the 35% of visual learning style, the field of physical/kinaesthetic intelligence explains 28% of physical/kinaesthetic learning style and the field of oral/linguistic intelligence explain 25% of audial learning style.Keywords: Learning, Learning Institutions, Learning Styles, Intelligence, Multiple Intelligences Theory.
