Criticizing the non-realism thought of Don Cupitt

Don Cupitt is considered by many as one of the most controversial English philosophers of the 21st century. Cupitt started his life both in Church as a clergyman and in academia as lecturer. He rose to fame in 1984 during his (Sea of Faith) project which was telecasted on BBC television. His book "Taking leave of God" gave a firm introduction of his non-realism faith. According to Cupitt's non-realism faith, there is only one reality. This reality is the realm of material things and living organisms. According to Cupitt, there is no "personal God" "out there" who gives ultimate meaning to human world. In a nutshell God is the result of the projection of human mind. Don Cupitt questioned the very foundation of the Orthodox Churches by calling for the redefinition of their core beliefs and practices. This includes the call made by Cupitt to make Christianity "autonomous". His criticisms of the Churches attracted many investigations into his works. Some critics of Cupitt's thoughts are Stephen T. Davis, Gregory Spearritt, Brian Hebblethwaite and Keith Ward. These critics have observed some deficiencies in Cupitt's arguments. Keith Ward, in his book "Holding Fast to God", published in 1982 criticized that Don Cupitt's "autonomy" claim in itself lacks autonomy. Both Gregory Spearritt and Brian Hebblethwaite have accused Cupitt of merging Christianity with Buddhism. They both refer to Cupitt as a Christian Buddhist. A research into Cupitt's non-realism and criticism by his critics reveals that some criticisms made on Cupitt appear not to be objective. On the other hand some criticisms have not been replied by Cupitt. This is mainly because Cupitt has been changing his position and eventually, totally broke away from Christian non-realism due an unknown reason. This research investigates the Cupitt's non-realism. It also citicizes some of points in Cupitt's non-realism.
