Ünal Kuş's paintings as expressionist forms of creation

Expressionism applies to several disciplines however it attains its most powerful forms of expression in visual arts. Expressionism is not solely a movement but a way of thinking based on the human inner world. From this point of view, it is argued that nature and society were reflected in a subjective reality. Expressionistic formal and contextual characteristics are rather structured with dense color, contrasting values, and deformations that develop with the emotions of the artist. The aim of this thesis, which also examines the contextual and historical development of expressionism, is to look at paintings of Ünal Kuş as an expressionist mode of creativity. Information about expressionism and Ünal Kuş's paintings are obtained from the literature review, interviews with the artist and observation methods. Many paintings examined in the context of expressionism and historical development were selected to support the plastic analysis of Ünal Kuş's paintings. In this study, plastic analysis is made on the paintings The Girl with Bicycle, Bold Relationships, Dialogue in the context of Ünal Kuş's artistic adventure, style and expressionist mode of creativity. Drawings of the artist, who uses several symbols in his paintings, become narration to express his emotions. Artist's choice of colors, compositions and deformations are developed with spiritual reactions depending on symbols which are expressing emotions. This development is based on instinct with the theme of painting and artist's subjective approach. This study will reveal the expressionistic approach of the artist towards figures and objects and to fill a gap in literature where we couldn't find extensive information about the artist until today.
