Abstract (EN)

This thesis has been prepared with an emphasis on researching portrait art, the purpose and change of the portrait, the emphasis on the expression, spirit and dramatism involved in the changing world order and over the years. The literature review of portrait artists has been made for the scope of this thesis. Starting with the definition and history of the portrait, a general definition has been presented first. For the purpose of this thesis, the exspressionism movement has been examined the works of the artist also have been examined first. In the paintings applied with an expressive attitude, psychological factors such as melancholy, traumas, illness and sadness were dealt with. Usage of gray and its shades in the work preferred in order to make the iner world, which is handled with a plastic attitude, more effective. This study, which was prepared in accordance with the information obtained, was gathered under 4 main sections. The first part began with the definition of portraits and self-portraits, in the second and third sections, the art movements and the works of the leading portrait artists were discussed. In the fourth chapter, painting practices under the name of studies and analysis were examined. The portrait as a composition is considered as a whole in itself. Composition was tried to be created with the harmony and motion of colors in each other. At the same time, studied in terms of creating pictorial language and ended with 10 portrait paintings.
