Externalism: The bridge planned to be built in the Dardanelles

The matter of building a bosphorus bridge in Çanakkale has protected its topicality for a long time. Where the bridge is going to be built and accordingly what effects it will create has always been a matter of discussion among a variety of groups. Some groups think that the bridge must definitely be built and it will have great contributions towards Çanakkale and around the city, whereas some of the groups suppose that the bridge will do more harm than good.The fact that the bridge that is going to be built for the purpose of transportation will provide added value in social, economic and cultural areas in addition to its main purpose of usage will be useful for people even though they won?t have to endure the cost of it; however, if some kind of damage occurs, the cost will be too much to pay. Therefore, the bridge will affect the environment positively or negatively by revealing external effects apart from its main purpose.The aim of this study is to state the possible negative and positive externalities the bridge planned to be built might arouse and find out what effects the public opinion that indicates a variety of external effects on the matter of building the bridge or not focuses on particularly.In the first part, some explanations related with the bridge and the term ?externality? were given in order to assess the externalities of the bridge planned to be built. In the second part, the available bosphorus bridges in Istanbul were mentioned on the basis of externality and then the anticipated effects of the bridge planned to be built in Çanakkale were mentioned on the basis of externalities. Lastly in this part, the methods of internalizing externalities were stated. In the third part, the survey study revealing the sounding of public opinion and developed to find out the ideas of the people living in the neighbourhood on the external effects the bridge might arouse will be given with its analysis. Profound interviews done with some non-governmental organizations in Çanakkale and the city governors will be also given with their analyses.
