Abstract (EN)

Turkomen are one of the main founder groups in Iraq. The Arabgovernments which came to power in 1920 following the establishment ofIraq, tried to keep the Turkomen away from Iraqi politics. The pressure thathas been put on the Turkomen made them to be passive in Iraqi politics until1958. After that date, the establisment of Republic in Iraq has been veryimportant for Turkomen. Although, Turkomen wanted to be more active inIraqi politics, the pressure by Arabs has made all attepmts impossible. Ingeneral terms, the Iraqi governments have seen Iraq as an Arab country andtried to alienate the other groups, namely Turkomen and Kurds. The pressures on the Turkomen and Kurds have been increased with thetake over of the Baas regime in 1979. In this period, there has been manyinhuman treatments towards Turkomen and Kurds. Turkomen have been triedto be alienated, forced to immigrate. Moreover their leaders have beenexecuted. The defeat of Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990, made the Iraqigovernment to move out from the northern Iraq. In this period, the politicalpower of Turkomen has increased and as a result of this the Iraqi TurkomenFront has been established in order to represent Turkomen. In 2003, as aresult of the USA and England?s operations in Iraq, the Baas regime has beencolapsed and a new era has been started in the country. Following the Iraqiwar, the political system in the country has been changed significantly. Themulti-party political system has started. The Sunni governance which lastedfor eithy years has ended. The Kurds and Shiite who were under pressure forthose years have came to power. Turkomen are still trying to get their fullpolitical and cultural rights. The main strategy of Turkomen is to secure theintegrity of Iraq. However, it is very diffucult to say that Turkomen have animportant role in the Iraqi political system following the Iraqi war.
