Abstract (EN)

THE INHIBITIVE EFFECT OF SOME NOVEL CYANO SCHIFF BASES COMPOUNDS UPON THE ACIDIC CORROSION OF LOW CARBON STEEL (Masters Thesis) Rukiye ALTUNYURT GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY April 2013 ABSTRACT The inhibitory effect of 6 different Schiff base compounds 2-[(Z)-(2- hydroxyphenyl) methyleneamino] benzonitrile, 4-[(Z)-(2-hydroxyphenyl) methyleneamino] benzonitrile, 2-[(Z)-benzilidineamino] benzonitrile, 4-[(Z)-(2-hydroxyphenyl) methyleneamino] fthalo nitrile, 2-[(Z)-(4-cyonophenyl) methyleneamino] benzonitrile, 2-[(Z)-(2-cyonophenyl) iminomethyl] benzonitrile on the corrosion of mild steel inhibitor efficiency in 2M HCl has been investigated, using polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy techniques. The inhibition efficiency was observed to increase with both concentration and temperature for 2-[(Z)-(4-cyonophenyl) methyleneamino] benzonitrile remarkably compared to the other compounds. Thermodynamic parameters were also evaluated for the inhibition process. The inhibitors were observed to follow the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.
