Politization movements and city activities of PKK in the concept of low intensity conflict

Terror and Terrorism, in other words political violence movements, is a fact as old as the history of mankind. Terror, in the history, is sometimes applied towards sovereign power by politically weak and sometimes the sovereign power applied it towards the other side. In the 20th century, due to the changing of the aplomb of the World and intensification of international relations shooting- wars gave place to Low Intensity Conflict in which military, political, sociological, economic, psychological factors are used. The war concept of the age LIC, beside various use of force, is a conflict type that there are more parties and actors considering the other types of war. As a matter of fact, terror and terrorist organisations became the tools of LIC concept.Due to the sensitivity of its geopolitical position, Turkish Republic- from the late Ottoman Empire era to present- struggled with various riots and terrorist movements and this struggle still proceeds. PKK, the subject of the thesis, has adopted Guerilla type conflict strategy which can be interpreted within the context of LIC and with this way PKK tries to take the support of the of all Kurdish people of which it is the so called representative. In order to reach this goal, PKK applied various violence strategies since its fist armed attack on 15 August 1984.In this context, PKK concentrated on politisation activities beside rural terror in order to get the public support which is the indispensable element in Low-Intensity Conflicts and to gather the public around the ideology and the structuring of the organisation after its promoter Abdullah Öcalan was arrested in 1999. It put that strategy into practice in Turkey with several political parties, settlements of the youth and actions and organisations arranged in cities. In conclusion, this study was done to reveal how and with which actions PKK has carried out its strategy of politisation.Keywords: Terror, Low Intensity Conflict, Guerilla, PKK, Politization, Youth set-up, KCK.
