The importance of graphic documentation in the protective repair of wall pictures: Examinations on Neşet Günal's current wall paintings example

Within the scope of the thesis, the current wall painting named 'Development of Science' by the painter Neşet Günal in the Fahir Yeniçay lecture hall in the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Science of Istanbul University was examined with graphic documentation techniques. Graphic documentation is one of the basic stages of conservation-restoration studies in terms of visual recording of the current status of historical documents and evaluation of the additions that occur with restoration or over time. Detailed research to be done before starting the conservation-restoration works is important in terms of recognizing the work and making the appropriate intervention. Within the scope of the thesis, the graphic techniques applied on the existing wall painting of Neşet Günal are included. On the wall painting, Visible Light Photography (VIS), Raking Light Photography (RAK), Ultraviolet / Ultraviolet Fluorescence Photography (UVF), Infrared Photography (IR), False Color Visual documentation studies were performed using / FC, Infrared False Color / IRFC, Ultraviolet False Color / UVFC and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) techniques. As a result of the studies, degradations were reached about the construction technique of the wall painting, the subsequent interventions and degradation.
