An analysis of emotional labour behavior on burnout i̇n psychological capital context: A study on health providers

Psychological capital, which briefly represents the improvable and measurable positive capacities of individuals, has become a more essential concept lately; especially for positive organizational behavioral scientists, as its importance is being appreciated more in service sector now. Likewise, emotional labour concept, which can be described as the effort that employers working in service sector put, by arranging their emotions according to the expectations of the organization, has also gained importance lately. The third concept that takes place in this study is burnout syndrome. There have been numerous studies on burnout syndrome compared to psychological capital and emotional labour concepts that take place in this study. This study demonstrates whether psychological capital has a moderating effect in the relationship between emotional labour and burnout syndrome or not, based on the research conducted on healthcare providers. In this research, the results of a questionnaire which was carried out with 150 healthcare providers (doctors, nurses, medical secretaries, and medical technicians) are analyzed. The survey was conducted through SPSS programme and moderator analysis method. The research showed that only the hope dimension of psychological capital has a moderating effect on burnout syndrome. Based on this result, administrators in health care services can avoid possible negative consequences of emotional burnout by giving priority to employ individuals who have high hope levels; and they may try to increase the hope levels of their employees through short term trainings and motivational processes.
