Analysis on microstructure of cutting tools when drilling flat glass

Abstract (EN)

Glass is preferred in many fields in today's industry. The application areas of the glass are expanding day by day, so a very high amount of glass is required to be processed. Preparation of drilling tools is the most important effective factor in glass drilling. In order to investigate the effect of the microstructure on the life of the drilling tools, three different drilling tools were prepared and tested. The performance of the tools is examined under the same drilling conditions. Experimental works were carried out on a glass drilling machine in a flat glass factory. The microstructure analysis of the tolls is presented based on the spectrum results using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis device (EDX). Life time of the drilling tools is compared to each other. In comparison between the drills, addition of iron to copper based drilling tools increased the service life of the tools. A new chemical structure has been created that can be used in glass drilling industry. The drill (D3) with a mixing ratio of approximately 53% copper, 11% iron, 4.4% zinc and containing diamond particles is more suitable for use in terms of tool life.
