Abstract (EN)

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of obesity in rural and urban areas of Düzce province and to determine its relationship with risk factors. Method: The population of this cross-sectional descriptive study consisted of 246,813 adults aged between 15-65 years who were registered in any Family Medicine Unit in Düzce. Between 18.02.2019 and 30.04.2019, 935 volunteers from the Family Health Centers who agreed to participate in the study were interviewed. Regardless of the age and gender criteria of the individuals to be selected from Family Health Centers, the determined number was reached by systematic random sample selection method. Four groups were determined according to BMI; those with <18.5 were considered to be underweight, 18.5-24.99 with normal weight, 25-29.99 with overweight and ≥30 with obese. Results: In this study, the prevalence of obesity was found to be 31.8%, 34.1% for women and 28.7% for men. Overweight is 30.5% in women, 38.8% in men and 34.1% in general. The average waist circumference values are higher than the upper limit of obese men and women. Obesity is more frequent in married and housewives, positively correlated with age and negatively correlated with education level. The highest SBP and DBP values were obese in both genders. As BMI increased, the frequency of DM, HT, hypothyroidism CAD and hyperlipidemia increased significantly. People in the obese group most often go to work with a private car and inactivity is higher than the other groups. There is a negative correlation between exercise frequency and obesity. Obesity increases as the time spent on daily television and internet increases. Obese people have more frequent night eating habits and BMI increases as the rate of eating increases. Obesity is more common in individuals who are fat as a child and those who have obese family. In all BMI groups, those who do not apply to any center for weight-loss are the highest, and those who prefer at least primary health care center. In most of the participants, the source of information about obesity is printed / visual media. Conclusion: The role of primary care is thought to be very important in the fight against increasing obesity. The recognition of risk factors that may cause obesity and the elimination of modifiable ones is critical. It is thought that obesity should be prevented in non-obese, weight loss should be ensured in obese, strict follow-up to prevent complications and timely interventions should be performed.
