METHODS OF CONTROL AND DISPOSAL OF LEACHATE IN LANDFILLS ANDA PRACTICE(M.Sc. Thesis)Seçil ÖZGÖÇMENGAZ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJanuary 2007ABSTRACTWater with highly organic and inorganic contaminant characteristics called leachate isformed by the humidity of waste and external waters entering to the landfill site. It isquite hard to determine the amount and characteristic of the leachate. The amountdepends on the waste composition, method of operation, seasonal changes, capacity ofthe waste to hold humidity and the landfill characteristics. Waste composition andtreatment method, age of landfill and the physical-chemical reactions are the mainsources determining leachate characteristics.In this study, the general structure of landfill sites and the on-site processes are defined.Determination of the leachate amount and the effecting factors are also mentioned.Effective parameters were analyzed while determining leachate characteristics. Effortwas made to highlight changes in the characteristic by the age of leachate and theapplicable methods of disposal were discussed. Furthermore, studies were made ontreatment plant of Odayeri landfill site that has been in operation since 1995. With thesestudies effects of the waste amount and rainfall on the amount of leachate entering to theplant were analyzed and an increase in the amount was observed in winter period.Moreover, efficiency ratio of COD and NH4-N removal was tried to be determine.Removal ratios for COD 62% and NH4-N 46% were calculated in 2005.Science Code : 903.1.074Key Words : Landfill, leachate, leachate treatmentPage Number : 82Adviser : Prof. Dr. Erdoğan HASDEM R
