Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between breakfast consumption habit and breakfast type with body mass index (BMI) value and being overweight/obesity in adults who exercise regularly; to determine whether it affects physical activity level. 86 (49 male, 37 female) adult individuals participated in the study voluntarily. Food frequency questionnaire of participants covering the last 1 month , 2-day (24-hour) diet record, physical activity record, body composition and antropometric measurements were measured. Examining the relationship between the frequency and type of breakfast of individuals and BMI, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio, fat ratio classifications and abdominal obesity, it has been observed that individuals who have breakfast every day are in the most normal category in all classifications, except for the fat ratio. It was found that individuals who have breakfast 3-4 days a week had a higher frequency of being in the normal category according to their BMI and fat ratio classification (respectively: 41.2% and 47.1%) than individuals who have breakfast 5-6 days a week (respectively: 30.8% and 38.5%). The most common group of abdominal obesity is individuals who have breakfast 1-2 days a week. While 42.4% of people who consumed classic breakfast (CB) were overweight, 16.7% were in the obesity class, participants who preferred the fast breakfast (FB) type had a higher frequency of being in the overweight and obesity class than those who consumed CB. 75.0% of people who consume breakfast cereals (BC) are in the normal category, and obesity is not observed in this group of people. Abdominal obesity is the most common group among the CB,FB and BC groups, and abdominal obesity is not observed in people who consume BC. Between the frequency of breakfast and the percentage of energy expenditure until noon (EEUN), the average EEUN percentage of people with a frequency of breakfast 4 and above per week on non-exercise days (NED) was significantly higher (43.1%) than people who have breakfast 2-3 times per week (40.9%) (f=3,982;p<0.05).
