The effect of geography teaching with EBA course on students' academic achievement

The aim of this study is to determine whether there is a significant difference in academic achievement between the students studying geography with traditional methods and the students studying geography with EBA Course. The absence of a study on geography teaching with EBA Course shows the importance and originality of the subject. The research was conducted in Soma Linyit Anadolu High School in the first semester of 2019-2020 academic year. The research has both qualitative and quantitative features. In the quantitative part of the study, the pretest-posttest control group pattern was used, while in the qualitative part, the semi-structured ınterview form was used to get the students' opinions about EBA Course after the practice. The sample of the study consists of 63 equal weight class students, 32 of whom are experimental and 31 are the control group. While geography teaching was given to experimental group students with EBA Course, geography teaching was given to control group students with the traditional method. The data were analyzed using the relevant (dependent) samples t-test and unrelated (independent) samples t-test in accordance with the problem and sub-problems of the research. In order to collect the data, the acquisition comprehension tests prepared by Ministry of National Education General Directorate of Measurement, Evaluation and Examination Services and published annually were used. This achievement test was applied to both groups as a pretest and no significant difference was found between the groups. According to the post-test results after the practice, a significant difference was found between the experimental and control groups and it was determined that the experimental group students, who were teaching geography with EBA Course, were more successful than the control group students who were teaching geography with traditional methods. In addition, according to the analysis of qualitative data, it was seen that the experimental group students had positive opinions towards the EBA Course. According to the results of the research, the use of EBA materials and especially EBA Course in educational environments will increase the use of technology in geography teaching and will create more effective and lasting learning environments by attracting students' interest.
