Investigation of antioxidant, enzyme and antimicrobial activities of echnophora chrysantha for determining its potential in the pharmaceutical field

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to determine antioxidant, antimicrobial activities, tyrosinase, AChE and BChE inhibitory activities of the extracts derived from an endemic species of E. chrysantha. Antioxidant tests for E. chrysantha extracts including, FRAP, DPPH and CUPRAC were studied spectrophotometrically. Antimicrobial activity was tested by agar well diffusion and broth microdilution methods. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and enzyme inhibitory activities (tyrosinase, AChE and BChE enzyme inhibitor activity) were studied spectrophotometrically. It was found that TPC, TFC, FRAP and CUPRAC values of E. chrysantha in MeOH extract were 325μg GAE / g sample, 472 mg QE / g sample, 610 μM Trolox / g sample, 1115μM Trolox / g sample. It should be noted that E. chrysantha's MeOH extract (0.1177 ± 0.027 mg/mL) was found near radical cleansing activity to BHT (0.0317 ± 0.013 mg/mL) which is using as a standart. The determination of AChE and BChE inhibition revealed that the closest IC50 value to the galantamine standard was observed, particulary in the MeOH extract. In addition, it was determined that CHCl3 extract showed an antimicrobial effect on B. subtilis in agar well diffusion and broth microdilution methods. According to results of our study, E. chrysantha can be exploited as potential plant for designing the treatment options for hyperpigmentation problems and neurodegenerative diseases in medicine as well as for applicability in pharmacology, cosmetics and food industry.
