In the 19th century Ottoman Empire began the process of modernization by setting its sight on the West. The press life that began with Tanzimat (Reform) era contributed to the development of Turkish literature with in the frame of newspapers and magazines. As a result of the quick development of the press, the literary genres not seen in the Turkish literature before got into literary area and began to give their first examples. Being an important step of democratization for Turkish society, proclamation of the Second Constitutionalism resulted in various developments in press and literature areas. The Second Constitutionalism that was proclaimed after a long period of oppression and censorship caused a boom in newspaper and magazine numbers in Turkish press. Hundreds of magazines that put the ideas of "freedom, equality, constitutionalism" to the center of their publications entered press life and in a short span of time, most of them took leave in press life. Being the subject of this thesis, Cerîde was one of those magazines that emerged in this period (16 October 1908-19 August 1909). This study aims at determining the place of Cerîde Magazine in literature life and its importance during the period when it was published. Basics of this study are comprised of literary genres in the magazine. The study is consisted of four episodes. Before the first period, information about Ottoman press in the early part of 20th century and political and social events of that time is given. In the first episode, the characteristics of Cerîde Magazine are presented and its publication adventure, staff of authors, literary aspect is explained. In the second episode, literary genres in the magazine are classified. In the third episode, the literary genres classified are evaluated according to structure and content. In the last episode, literary texts in the magazine are translated into Latin alphabet. This study on Cerîde magazine presents importance in press history, Constitution period literature, the contribution of the poets and authors to Turkish literature of the period.
