Novels of Samin Kocagöz in the context of sociology of literature

Sociology of literature is an interdisciplinary field that has emerged using the advantages of two different disciplines sociolgy and literature. Sociology of literature attones the power of literature representing the society at an artistic level and sociology's current study area of the society. By doing so, unique features of sociology and literature are not ignored, in the contrary they provide an enriched source of data to the sociology of literature. The common aim of both disciplines is to understand and explain the society based on the individual. Although attention was drawn to the relationship between literature and society in the previous centuries, the emergence of the study of the literature of sociology as an academic discipline occurs in the twentieth century. Especially this topic was preferred due to the scarcity of studies in the field of sociology of literature and also the fact that studies of Samim Kocagöz, who writes his articles in a socialist-realistic line in Turkish literature, do not include any work on the subject. The current thesis evaluates the connection of literature with the society in scope of his novels. Discussing political and social aspects, novels of Samim Kocagöz have a wide time range starting from the last era of Ottoman Empire to the coup of 12 September, 1980. Content of the novels include the effects of political events such as the National Struggle Period, the transition to multi-party life, the 27 May 1960 coup, the 12 March Memorandum and the 12 September 1980 coup on the social structure. In this respect, his novels are an enriched source for the sociology of literature.
