Intermedial approaches to the musicalization of literature

This thesis comparatively examines how the musicalization of literature occurs in the West and Turkey by using intermediality theories and approaches. The first chapter of the thesis addresses the concepts, theories, typologies, and methods of intermediality. In the following two chapters, a comparative analysis of the musicalization of fiction in Western and Turkish literature is made in the context of intermediality discussions. The lack of "Music in Literature" approaches has been discussed in the case of the transfer of literature to music. While examining this situation in the West, sections from Paul Gallico's The Snow Goose were presented, and how Camel, who transferred this work to music, used the work, how the literature was transferred to music, and the problems that occurred during the transmission were mentioned. In this context, Metallica's song named One, which was inspired by Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun, was examined. In the third chapter, which focuses on Turkish literature, the horizontal expansion problem that arises in the transfer process of literary works in the genre of poetry to music and its solutions are emphasized. As an example of this transfer, prominent names of Turkish literature such as Nazım Hikmet Ran, Can Yücel, Sabahattin Ali, Orhan Veli Kanık, Ataol Behramoğlu, Atilla İlhan, Murathan Mungan, and Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu were used. When the musicalization of Turkish literature is studied through intermediality approaches, it is possible to encounter problems that did not attract enough attention before; therefore, this thesis offers solutions to emerging issues and new methodological approaches. Thus, the applicability of intermediality studies centered on Western canon literature and classical Western music in new fields such as Turkish literature, Anatolian rock, and Anatolian pop has been questioned.
