The clay tobacco-pipes uncovered from the excavations of ?Yeni Saray? at Edirne

Tobacco, which was brought to Istanbul, the capital of Ottoman, in the first quarter of 17th century by English people, was rapidly spread all around the country and started to be used by every category of people. Tobacco was said to be used by Ottoman in three pieces which are bowl, pipe and mouthpiece.In this thesis, 103 samples, which are selected among the bowls collected from Edirne Yeni Saray in 2009-2010 periods, are studied. 15 of these samples are delivered to the Edirne Museum by recording them to the inventory while 88 of them are delivered to the EYSK store as research material.The clay tobacco pipes are studied according to their features such as form, clay, construction and decoration techniques. 5 different types are determined in the scope of their form features. The forms are dated according to their typographical progress. Most of the samples are composed of the forms representing the early period and thus dated to the 17th and 18th century. Only 6 of the bowls which represent the features of the late period are dated to the 19th century.The observed colors of the EYSK pipes are white, gray, beige, red and brown. There exist silver and mica mixture in the clay of some of the samples. The outer surface is much polished and 10 of the samples are undercoat glazed, 1 of them is green glazed.A mark is found on the 17 of the bowls. 4 of the clay tobacco pipes marked as ?Vize? presented information about their production place.The clay tobacco pipes had been used since the 17th century but was removed simultaneously with the collapse of Ottoman Empire from the lives of people and the memory of society in the first half of the 20th century. The last bowl shop in Istanbul came to an end due to the stoppage of the bowl sales and closed in 1928; therefore, this folk art is forgotten day by day.Keywords: Ottoman, pipe, tobacco, clay, pipe maker, mark
