Bone and ivory artifacts in the Museum of Ephesus

This work comprises a group of bone and ivory artifacts under the protection of Ephesus Museum. In total, 74 artifacts have been examined, of which, 71 are bone and 3 are ivory. Majority of them are of non-excavatory origin. 3 of the bone artifacts are part of the context foundings of the Recovery Excavations of the Lands of Turgay Dereli and of Selçuk Tavşantepe. Many of these artifacts are today at Ephesus Museum, 5 of them on display and 69 of them in the archeologic storehouse. In these work, bone and ivory technologies are adressed; some information about the excavation locations where they were first discovered are also included. However, those artifacts that were delivered to the museums via non-excavatory ways do not provide any information as to their place of discovery or their stratigraphy, hence a consideration of their origins does not give us any insight. Hence, the artifacts concerned in this work have been examined by analogy to similar artifacts discovered and investigated by researchers in other excavations. A wide range of the artifacts are tools manufactured for personal and daily usage. The exact function of some of the artifacts could not be ascertained. The groups forming a certain typology are considered in unison, but those that do not are treated according to their specific functions.
